The Royal Institute of Art was founded in 1735, and is today the oldest higher education institution of fine arts in Sweden. The institute offers courses in fine arts at basic and advanced levels, and in architecture at an advanced level.
Both in fine arts and in architecture, the teachers are themselves professional artists, theorists, architects or teachers with other relevant professional specialization. The teachers have their own professional careers besides their work at the Royal Institute of Art. This helps to maintain close contact with the world of art and society at large, and makes the teaching vivid and continuously subject to change, whether it be in step – or out of step – with current society.
